WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is serving up an election-year reminder that he ended the Iraq war, visiting a Texas military base two years to the day that he formally declared the end of the U.S. combat mission.

Obama's visit Friday to the vast Fort Bliss Army post in El Paso underscores a point Obama has made repeatedly on the campaign trail: He made a promise to end the unpopular Iraq war and kept it. Obama also visited Fort Bliss on Aug. 31, 2010, the day he announced the end of the U.S. combat role.

The White House says the visit is official business ? not campaign-related, although the distinction is not always clear. Obama will speak to troops and have a round-table discussion with service members and military families, the White House said.

Obama returns to the campaign trail on Saturday with appearances in Iowa.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the visit to Fort Bliss will highlight administration efforts to support U.S. service members and their families, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those efforts include attempts to combat what Carney called "unseen wounds" of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

Fort Bliss soldiers participated in the Iraqi invasion in 2003 and were among the last to serve in combat roles there. The post endured significant losses during the Iraq war.

Carney told reporters Thursday that the visit was about more than politics. He called Obama's record on defense issues substantive and said the president had a "profound commitment" to end the war in Iraq and bring U.S. troops home.

"Part of ending the war in Iraq responsibly is standing by those who served," Carney said.

Veterans are a key voting bloc in the closely fought presidential race.

A Gallup tracking poll in August shows Republican Mitt Romney leads Obama, 55 percent to 38 percent among veterans. Exit polls conducted in 2008 showed voters who had served in the military preferred Republican John McCain over Obama by 10 percentage points.

At their party's convention this week in Tampa, Fla., Romney and other Republicans made repeated references to veterans. Romney broke away from the convention Wednesday to speak to the American Legion in Indianapolis.

Mindful of his poll numbers, Obama has sharply contrasted his record on Iraq and Afghanistan with Romney's rhetoric.

Campaigning in Virginia on Wednesday, Obama cited Romney's comment that ending the war in Iraq was "tragic."

His Republican rival "doesn't have a plan to bring home the 33,000 troops who will be coming home from Afghanistan next month," Obama said. "He likes to talk tough, but he doesn't have a lot of details when it comes to these critical issues. "

By contrast, Obama said ? repeating a familiar theme ? "When I say I will end the war in Iraq, I will end it. When I say that we will go after (Osama) bin Laden, we'll go after him."

As long as he is commander in chief, Obama added, "we will serve our veterans as well as they've served us. I mean it."

The killer of ex-Beatle John Lennon says he used hollow point bullets to shoot the singer ?because they were more deadly.?

Mark David Chapman retold chilling details of his Dec. 8, 1980, crime during a New York parole board hearing on Aug. 22. He was denied parole for a seventh time the next day and remains at Wende Correctional Facility in western New York. The parole department released transcripts of the hearing Wednesday.

Chapman said he was living in Hawaii when he decided to target Lennon ?because he was very famous.?

He said he also considered targeting television host Johnny Carson and actor George C. Scott.

But Lennon was more famous, Chapman said. He insisted he had no anger toward Lennon:??If he was less famous than three or four other people on the list, he would not have been shot.?

Chapman said he bought the gun he used in Honolulu and needed only to show a driver?s license to get it. However, he said he?got the hollow-point bullets from an old friend in Atlanta who was a police officer.

?I made a phone call in New York and the fellow said, ?you?re not going to get any bullets out of me. It?s just not done here.??

He said he told his Atlanta friend he needed the bullets for protection.

?I didn?t tell him what I was going to do,? Chapman said.

When asked why he chose hollow-point, Chapman responded ?Because they were more deadly.?

Asked if he wanted to ?inflict death,? on Lennon, Chapman responded, ?Yes. Absolutely.?

Chapman said he had flown from Hawaii to New York twice to check out Lennon?s apartment building, called the Dakota.

He said on one trip, he saw the film ?Ordinary People,? and called his wife, who was in Hawaii, and told her of his deadly plan but that he decided not to go through with it.

The compulsion to kill grew again after he returned to Hawaii, so he flew back to New York without telling his wife he planned to kill Lennon, said Chapman, who was 25 at the time.

Chapman said that on the day he shot Lennon, he staked out the Dakota from before noon and talked to him early in the day.

?He was very kind to me? and signed an album while his wife, Yoko Ono, waited in a limousine, Chapman said.

?Very cordial and very decent man,? Chapman said.??? But I was so compelled to commit murder that nothing would have dragged me away from that building.?

Just before 11 p.m., Lennon and Ono arrived at the apartment building. Ono?got out of the car first, Chapman said, and went into the alcove of the Dakota as Lennon lingered at the car a moment.

?And then when Mr. Lennon passed me I turned, pulled out my weapon and shot him in the back,? Chapman said.

The record, he said,?shows him calling out ?Mr. Lennon,? but he told the parole board he didn?t say that.

?I just shot him,? he said.

Chapman fired five shots with a .38-caliber revolver, hitting Lennon four times in front of Ono and others.

There was a scream, and the Dakota doorman, Jose, grabbed Chapman?s pistol, the gunman told the parole board.

Chapman said he was carrying a copy of J.D. Salinger?s ?The Catcher in the Rye? when he shot Lennon. He claimed to identify with the main character, ?who seemed to be lost and troubled.?

While in prison, Chapman said, he has been in his cell writing letters, reading and thinking.

He also said he has been having?conjugal visits with his wife ?pretty steady? for 20 years. His wife lives in Hawaii, he said.

He also said he has a ?deep relationship with Christ? that started when he was in a Christian camp at age 16.

?So this is obviously very embarrassing for me now, having committed murder,? Chapman said.

If he were to be paroled, Chapman said, he would go to Medina, N.Y., about 50 miles northeast of Buffalo, where a minister whom his wife met offered to refurbish an apartment and give him two jobs on his farm.

Chapman said he had corresponded with the pastor but?met him just two days before the parole hearing.

The reason for the crime, according to Chapman: ?Attention, bottom line.?

He said he received the attention but now he feels it was an??absolutely ridiculously selfish act to take another human life so that I could be pumped up into, you know, something that I wasn?t to begin with.?

He also told a parole commissioner, ?Fame is ridiculous. It holds no value.?

?It was a very selfish act and I deeply regret it,? Chapman told the board. ?I?m sorry for my crime.?

The warm-up acts are winding down, the main event looms and the stakes are high.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney finally can accept what has long eluded him: the Republican presidential nomination.

Running mate Paul Ryan has played his part, energizing Republicans gathered in Tampa, Fla. But most vice presidential acceptance speeches have short shelf lives. Actually, so do most presidential ones.

But there have been some exceptions: Republican Barry Goldwater's 1964 assertion that "extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice," John F. Kennedy's 1960 "We stand tonight on the edge of a new frontier."

One president famously waved off his expected re-nomination. "I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party," Vietnam War-weary President Lyndon Johnson said in 1968.

Some acceptance speeches can return to bite. "The Congress will push me to raise taxes, and I'll say no... and they'll push again. And I'll say to them: 'Read my lips. No new taxes.'" George H.W. Bush's 1988 words scorched him politically later when he backed a bipartisan plan raising taxes.

Bill Clinton accepted the 1992 Democratic nomination saying, "I still believe in a place called hope," both a reference to his Arkansas hometown and his prognosis for the future.

George W. Bush in 2000 presented himself as "a compassionate conservative." And Barack Obama in 2008 told the nation: "I realize that I am not the likeliest candidate for this office. I don't fit the typical pedigree.."

But, he continued, "Times are too serious, the stakes are too high for this same partisan playbook. So let us agree that patriotism has no party."

It's Romney's turn at bat.

Obama had no public events Friday. But he said in an interview with Time Magazine that his re-election might help break the political stalemate in Washington, much like "popping a blister."

For example, you see someone wearing a pair of jeans and they look great on her/him, but it may not necessarily look good on you; yet we want it anyways. We are all human, all prone to genetic variation; what we should do is embrace these variations. No one feature is better than another, only different. Whether you are a man or a woman, a healthy, strong physique will always appear attractive; tummy tuck and other procedures are there to help you attain a certain look, not damage your body. Going to the gym, working hard, dieting should be the first attempts before turning to liposuction and other procedures.

As stated above, there are circumstances where plastic surgery is necessary for reconstructive purposes and these people should undergo the procedure to regain a normal life, and for people who just want to improve their appearance, I can only say do not overuse the facilities. ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? 0mYour mood for food can be changed by a restaurant's choice of music and lighting, leading to increased satisfaction and reduced calorie intake, according to a new study.

"When we did a makeover of a fast-food restaurant, we found that softer music and lighting led diners to eat 175 fewer calories and enjoy it more," said the study's lead author, Brian Wansink, professor of marketing and director of Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab.

Wansink and his co-author, Koert van Ittersum of the Georgia Institute of Technology, found that softening the lighting and music in fast-food restaurants didn't change what people ordered, but it caused them to eat 18 percent less of what they ordered -- 775 calories instead of 949. They also rated the food as more enjoyable. The results are posted online in the journal Psychological Reports.

The Wansink-Ittersum study counters the popular notion that people who dine in a relaxed environment, with soft lighting and mellow music, will order more food and eat more than those in a more typical dining environment.

"These results suggest that a more relaxed environment increases satisfaction and decreases consumption," Wansink said. "This is important information for fast-food restaurants, which are often accused of contributing to obesity: Making simple changes away from brighter lights and sound-reflecting surfaces can go a long way toward reducing overeating -- and increase their customers' satisfaction at the same time."
