The reasons you are having a hearing test done don't matter, and because you don't know what it will tell you, they can be scary. However, your audiologist can help you prepare and remove some of the concerns that you may have, making you better prepared for your tests. When you are consulting with your audiologist he will get some important information from you to help him decide why you may need a hearing test. One thing you will be asked during this consultation is how close you are to loud noise on a regular basis and if those noises have ever left a ringing sound in your ears. He also needs to know if you have recently been on any medications that could influence how well you hear, if you have been sick, or had an ear infection recently. Your ear will then be examined so that he can make sure that nothing is clogging the ear canal.

Sometimes you need to wear headphones to take your test so you will need to remove any jewelry that may hinder the results of your testing. If you wear a hearing aid, you will need to remove it as well, so that your results are not construed. The headphones need to have a proper fit in order for the tests to be accurate. The hearing tests can not only be performed at a hearing center, but also in schools or at your doctor office. The type of test you have will depend upon your symptoms.

There are four main types of testing that your hearing center can perform:

? "Whisper test", where the audiologist whispers questions to the patient who is then asked to repeat what was asked. These questions will get louder until the patient can hear it satisfactorily. This process is repeated for each ear.

? Audio audiometry, where different sounds are transmitted through headphones at various speeds, pitch, and volume. You will be asked to make some sort of sign when you hear the sound, which is regulated, depending on how well it is being heard.

? Tuning fork, where sounds are created by either clanging the forks together or vibrating them. This tests whether or not the sounds are going through the ear parts properly.

? Auditory brain stem response, which tests to see if your hearing loss is located in the brain. This is done by putting small electrodes on your head and ears and monitoring how your brain responds to the sounds.

Thankfully your hearing tests can usually be performed in one day and will be pain free. This means you can go home soon after your tests are complete and you can have your hearing problems resolved quickly.
