UFC 155: Junior dos Santos Shows the True Face of Courage in Cain Velasquez Loss
Thirty minutes after entering the cage against challenger Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos was smiling. His face may have been grotesquely swollen. He may have just endured a five-round beating for the ages. He may have just lost his UFC title and spot as the world's most dangerous man?but Cain Velasquez couldn't take away his grin, the unabashed smile of a young boy up to no good.
The story in the aftermath of UFC 155, both here at Bleacher Report and on websites across the world, is the return of Velasquez, an amazing fighter who regained the heavyweight title by administering a brutal beating to the man who had knocked him out and embarrassed him on national television in the UFC's Fox debut last year.
And rightfully so. There's a lot to unpack with a Velasquez win, plenty to parse?everything from wrestling's rise back to the top of the martial arts pack to Cain's role in reaching out to the teeming masses of Hispanic boxing fans whom the UFC hopes will embrace the sport's first Mexican-American champion. Cain, despite his dead eyes and even deader soundbites, is good copy.
But the image that remains for me, long after they've finally soaked up all of Joe Lauzon's blood and the remnants of dos Santos's battered pride and packed the UFC Octagon away for the next show, is the deposed champion's bravery and resilience.
Velasquez was unyielding for 25 minutes, but really it was a punch in the first five-minute round that ended the night for dos Santos, a crushing right hand that took advantage of Junior's propensity to back away with his hands down and his chin up.
Everything that came after was just mop up duty. Dos Santos was a dead man walking, never quite regaining his equilibrium, standing there and receiving punishment.
And though Velasquez's legendary cardio faltered a bit after three rounds, he never stopped coming forward, a fistic robot with the intensity set on high.? Punch after punch, takedown after takedown (Velasquez set a UFC record with 11) and minutes of grinding his head into Junior's against the fence, and Velasquez still couldn't make the champion quit.
As the minutes counted down to zero, the enduring image wasn't Velasquez and his quiet competence and well-rounded game. It was dos Santos rising again and again to his feet, refusing the easy way out. Fighting.
As strange as it sounds, it's a rare thing to see in this business. Most men, when faced with that kind of onslaught, are happy to let the officials come running to their rescue,? not exactly quitting, but not upset that the fight is called to a stop either. It's human instinct?living to fight another day.

Whatever is inside Junior dos Santos, it isn't anything resembling "normal." And make no mistake about it: We may call it courage and sing his praises, but it's horrible for him as a human being. After all, while the ancients may have celebrated warriors in song, the dirge is always about a dead man.
None of that makes it any less admirable. What dos Santos did at UFC 155 is unimaginable. It's easy to picture yourself as Velasquez, the hero who administers the beating, the Jason Statham of the cage, maybe even smirking out a wisecrack or two in the corner after propelling your fists into your enemy's head again and again.
What's harder is imagining yourself as dos Santos. In the midst of your greatest professional failure, in the middle of an extended beating that would have made viewers of Django Unchained grimace, to get back up. Even better, get back up and smile.
Cain Velasquez is a great fighter. But based on what I saw last night, Junior dos Santos is more than that. He's a great man.

Obama deploys troops to Africa to defend U.S. Embassy
With rebels advancing on the capital city of the Central African Republic, the U.S. has deployed about 50 combat troops to neighboring Chad to support the evacuation of U.S. Embassy personnel and American private citizens, President Obama notified Congress in a letter Saturday.
Mr. Obama said he took the action "due to the deteriorating security situation in the Central African Republic and the potential threat to U.S. citizens." The evacuation of Americans from Bangui, Central African Republic, began on Thursday.
The president said the troops, although equipped for combat, were deployed as a stand-by and evacuation force "solely for the purpose of protecting U.S. citizens and property" until the evacuation from the Central African Republic is completed.
Rebels in the Central African Republic seized the city of Sibut on Saturday, 114 miles from Bangui. Countries in the region have agreed to send more forces to support the government of President Francois Bozize.
In October 2011, Mr. Obama sent about 100 U.S. military personnel to Uganda to aid in the hunt for warlord Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army.

Are you where you thought you?d be when you looked forward a year ago?
Yes! I have been full-time for a year, I?m earning more than enough to support myself ? it?s so nice to be able to have lunch out when I want to, or treat myself to some nice pampery toiletries in the sales, and to be able to buy my friends nice birthday and Christmas presents. I have had one holiday and some time off, I?ve got better at scheduling in time off, and I do indeed have a solid roster of regular clients to keep me going ? I?ve added one or two per month this year.
What has changed and what has stayed the same?
The main thing is having only one job ? much easier. I have been able to spend more time with my friends and with Matthew. I have stopped working with Master?s students through their course, as I discovered this was quite draining and gave rise to lots of urgent panicky work for people?s deadlines (I?ve been able to recommend such prospects over to a friend who?s great at working with such customers and is specialising in academic work). I?ve published one e-book and I?m about to publish another, so I should have some sort of passive income going on soon. What?s stayed the same? I?m enjoying my work still (hooray!) and enjoying working with clients around the world. And apart from a brief flurry around the beginning of the year and then September, when I presented my paper at the Iris Murdoch conference, I haven?t finished writing up my research project, although I have finished the questionnaire gathering side of it.
What have you learned? What do you wish you?d known a year ago?
I?ve learned to be better at stopping work to have the evening off, to not panic when the work goes quiet, and how to work on my own, I suppose. I wish I?d formulated some of my tips for homeworkers sooner so I could make sure I was looking after myself. I also wish I?d found some back-up people earlier, so I can be ill or busy without worry.
Any more hints and tips for people?
If you?re thinking about jumping ship from your full- or part-time day job, and you?ve got the money saved up to support yourself for a few months ? go for it!
And ? where do you see yourself and your business in a(nother) year?s time?
I?ve got some personal plans bubbling away, and I?d like to be training for a marathon in the next year or two. Business-wise, I would like it to be pretty well as it is now ? a good roster of interesting regular clients keeping me busy and keeping my income steady.

China and Japan are constantly struggling over territory, politics and economic dominance - but now it appears the two Asian giants could have found another topic to fight about.Earlier this month a Japanese man was officially declared the world's oldest living person at 115, but China is fielding an alternative candidate for the title.
This week an official news agency repeated claims that a Chinese woman is 127 years old, which would make her the record-holder by a large margin.
Jiroemon Kimura, a former postman who was born on April 19, 1897, was named the world's oldest person by Guinness World Records after the death of American Dina Manfredini.
He lives in Kyotango and has 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr Kimura is the second oldest man ever whose age has been officially verified.
However, just a few days ago the Xinhua agency reported on Luo Meizhen, a woman who claims to have turned 127 in September.
?Ms Luo lives in Guangxi region's Bama county, an area famous for the longevity of its residents.
Her ID card claims she was born in 1885, but she does not have a birth certificate to prove this.
She lives with her son, who she says she gave to when she was aged 61.
If Ms Luo is truly 127, that would make her the oldest person ever to have lived, beating Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 aged 122.
It is unclear how aggressively China intends to pursue the centenarian's record claim, but it has the potential to become another bone of contention between the country and its rival power.
Even if Ms Luo does not manage to wrest the title from Mr Kimura, interest in her home county will doubtless continue as it draws thousands of visitors seeking to discover the secret behind the long lives of its 74 residents aged more than 100.

Little time left to head off longshoremen's strike
NEW YORK (AP) ? Shipments of products as varied as flat-screen TVs, sneakers and snow shovels could sit idle at sea or get rerouted, at great time and expense, if more than 14,000 longshoremen go on strike as threatened ? a wide-ranging work stoppage that would immediately close cargo ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to container ships.
Commerce could be brought to a near standstill at major ports from Boston to Houston if the strike takes place on Sunday, potentially delivering a big blow to retailers and manufacturers still struggling to find their footing in a weak economy.
"If the port shuts down, nothing moves in or out," said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. And when the workers do return, "it's going to take time to clear out that backlog, and we don't know how long that it's going to take."
The 15 ports involved in the labor dispute move more than 100 million tons of goods each year, or about 40 percent of the nation's containerized cargo traffic. Losing them to a shutdown, even for a few days, could cost the economy billions of dollars.
In addition to transporting goods, U.S. factories also rely on container ships for parts and raw materials, meaning supply lines for all sorts of products could be squeezed.
"The global economy moves by water, and shutting down container ports along the East and Gulf coasts while the national economy remains fragile benefits no one," Deborah Hadden, acting port director at Massport, the public agency that oversees shipping terminals in Boston. It is not a part of the contract dispute.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott said "the livelihood of thousands of Florida families lies in the balance."
The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group representing shipping lines, terminal operators and port associations, expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once already, for 90 days, but they have so far balked at extending it again when it expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
The union said its members would agree to an extension only if the Maritime Alliance dropped a proposal to freeze the royalties workers get for every container they unload. The Alliance has argued that the longshoremen, who it said earn an average $124,138 per year in wages and benefits, are compensated well enough already.
Federal mediators have been trying to push negotiations along, but there has been no word from either side on the progress of the talks since Dec. 24. As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, said the talks weren't going well and that a strike was expected.
The work stoppage would not be absolute. Longshoremen would continue to handle military cargo, mail, passenger ships, non-containerized items like automobiles, and perishable commodities, like fresh food.
Joseph Ahlstrom, a professor at the State University of New York's Maritime College and a former cargo ship captain, called container ships the "lifeblood of the country."
"We don't fly in a lot of products. It's just too expensive," Ahlstrom said. "The bulk of the products we import come in inside containers."
The White House has weighed in on the issue, urging dockworkers and shipping companies Thursday to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension. Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich said the administration is monitoring the situation closely.
If it happens, the walkout could be the biggest national port disruption since 2002, when unionized dockworkers were locked out of 29 West Coast ports for 10 days because of a contract dispute.
The ports only reopened after President George W. Bush, invoking powers given to him by the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, ordered an 80-day cooling-off period. Some economists estimated that each day of that lockout cost the U.S. economy $1 billion. It took months for the retail supply chain to fully recover.
An East Coast port freeze would have its biggest impact at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where 3,250 longshoremen handled 32.3 million tons of cargo in 2010. The authority is not a party to the contract dispute.
Other major ports affected would include Savannah, Ga., which handled 18 million tons, and Houston and Hampton Roads, Va., which each handled more than 12.5 million tons.
Thousands of other jobs would be directly affected by the shutdown. Truck drivers might not have any cargo to transport, tug boat captains no ships to guide and freight train operators nothing to haul.
Simultaneously, another labor dispute involving dock workers was playing out on the West Coast.
Longshoremen at several Pacific Northwest grain terminals worked Thursday under contract terms they soundly rejected last weekend. The owners implemented the terms after declaring talks at an impasse. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has yet to announce its next move.
Workplace rules, not salary and benefits, have been the obstacle to a new deal.
The dispute involves terminals in Portland, Ore., Vancouver, Wash., and Seattle, where longshoremen have been working without an agreement since the last contract expired Sept. 30.

Green chili peppers give soup a boost

Interpret the word "grilled" in the recipe loosely. The chicken for this soup can be broiled, cooked on a stove-top grill or griddle, or cooked on an outdoor grill. The most important thing is to cook it quickly with high heat and get some good color.
The chicken is added at the end of the cooking process to soup that gets a big flavor boost from green chili peppers. You can buy canned green chilies, but try roasting one yourself. Lay the roasted pieces of poblano on a cutting board and run a paring knife over the skin side to remove as much of the skin as you can, then ignore the rest.
If you like your spicy food super hot, double the amount of poblano. Serve with cheddar cheese bread, corn bread or black bean quesadillas.
Make ahead: The soup can be reheated, but it's best served the day it's made. The starch in the rice will thicken the soup. To reheat, you might need to add broth or water.
GRILLED CHICKEN AND GREEN CHILI SOUP
For the chicken:
12 ounces thinly sliced or pounded chicken cutlets
1 teaspoon chili powder
Salt
Freshly squeezed juice of 1 lime
1 tablespoon mild olive oil
For the soup:
1 tablespoon mild olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
Salt
1 small jalapeno pepper, stemmed, seeded and finely diced (about 1 tablespoon)
1 tablespoon double-concentrated tomato paste (may substitute 2 tablespoons regular tomato paste)
1 large (about 4 ounces) poblano pepper, roasted and cut into1/4-inch dice (about1/4 cup; see NOTE)
5 cups homemade or no-salt-added chicken broth, plus more as needed
2/3 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
Water (optional)
3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro
Freshly squeezed juice of 1 large or 2 small limes
For the chicken: Rub the cutlets with the chili powder and salt to taste in a shallow dish. Add the lime juice and oil and rub to coat thoroughly; marinate at room temperature for 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, start the soup: Heat the oil in a 4-quart soup pot over medium heat. Add the onion and season with salt to taste; cook for about 4 minutes, stirring every minute or so, until soft. Add the jalapeno; cook for 1 minute. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the poblano, 5 cups
of broth, the rice and salt to taste. Bring to a boil, cover and adjust the heat so the broth maintains a very low boil. Cook for about 20 minutes, until the rice is tender.
Meanwhile, preheat a grill, broiler, nonstick grill pan or griddle; grease the grate or surface with nonstick cooking oil spray. Cook the cutlets for 3 to 4 minutes until nicely browned. Turn them over and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through and nicely browned on the second side. Transfer to a large plate. Continue until all the chicken is cooked. Let it rest for 10 minutes, then cut into 1/2-inch pieces.
Once the rice is tender, add the chicken and cook until it is heated through, 4 to 5 minutes. If the soup is too thick, add water or broth. Stir in the cilantro; taste, and adjust the seasoning as needed. Just before serving, stir in the lime juice.
Note: Roast the poblano pepper on an aluminum-foil-lined baking sheet at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until the skin has blistered. Let it cool, then peel and seed it before cutting as needed.

Update #2: THQ President Responds To Today's Events
Update #2: THQ President Jason Rubin has posted a blog outlining what today's events mean for THQ, its studios, and the games the company is working on.
In a lengthy post addressed to the gaming community, Rubin explains what filing for Chapter 11 means for THQ and why they chose to do it the week before Christmas. Rubin once again stresses that all of the games THQ is currently working on are still on schedule. "The most important thing to understand is that Chapter 11 does not mean the end of the THQ story or the end of the titles you love," Rubin writes. "Quite the opposite is true, actually."

Original Story:?THQ just announced that it is filing for Chapter 11 and plans to sells all of its assets.
THQ announced that Clearlake has stepped in as the "stalking horse bidder" for the sale, which includes all four of its studios as well as the games they are currently working on. A stalking horse bid (as defined by Investopedia) is the first bid on a bankrupt company's assets, and is designed to prevent the troubled company from being low-balled. In essence, it sets a minimum price ? in THQ's case, roughly $60 million ? for the company. Other companies are now free to make higher bids for THQ to consider.
The studios for sale are Volition (Saints Row), Vigil Games (Darksiders), THQ Phoenix, and THQ Wireless.
The press release notes that THQ's foreign studios are not included in the agreement, which includes Relic Entertainment (Warhammer, Company of Heroes) and THQ Montreal, where Patrice D?silets is currently working on an unannounced project.?The press release also states that THQ will continue working uninterrupted as the sale proceeds. THQ Chairman and CEO Brian Farrell characterized the Chapter 11 filing and sale as the "...necessary next steps to complete THQ's transformation and position the company for the future..."
THQ's financial troubles have been apparent for months, and led to the publisher practically giving away many of its recent titles in a THQ Humble Bundle. We hope the sale will provide the company and its studios the financial stability it needs to continue making games for its fans.

(NASDAQ: THQI), a leading worldwide developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software, today announced that it entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement with a "stalking horse bidder," affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group, L.P., to acquire substantially all of the assets of THQ's operating business, including THQ's four owned studios and games in development. The sale will allow THQ to shed certain legacy obligations and emerge with the strong financial backing of a new owner with substantial experience in software and technology.
To facilitate the sale, THQ and its domestic business units have filed voluntary petitions under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The company's foreign operations, including Canada, are not included in the filings. The company has obtained commitments from Wells Fargo and Clearlake for debtor-in possession (DIP) financing of approximately $37.5 million, subject to Court approval.
THQ will continue operating its business without interruption during the sale period, subject to Court approval of THQ's first-day motions. All of the company's studios remain open, and all development teams continue. The company remains confident in its existing pipeline of games. THQ maintains relationships with some of the top independent development studios around the globe. As part of the sale, the company is seeking approval to assume the contracts of these studios, and Clearlake will assume these contracts.

Clearlake has agreed to serve as the "stalking horse bidder" for a Section 363 sale process, which allows other interested parties to come forward with competing bids. Aggregate consideration offered by Clearlake for the purchase totals approximately $60 million, including a new $10 million note for the benefit of the company's creditors. The company is asking the Court for a schedule to complete the sale process in about 30 days.
Consumers and retailers should see no changes while the company completes a sale. The new financing will support business operations throughout the period. THQ does not intend to reduce its workforce as a result of the filing, and employees will continue to work their usual schedules and receive normal compensation and benefits, pending customary Court approval.
As is the case after a Chapter 11 filing, THQ expects to receive notice from NASDAQ informing the company that its shares will be delisted from the exchange within nine calendar days of notification.

Ovarian Cancer - Questions and Answers - Revista Women's Health
What is ovarian cancer?
Ovarian cancer is cancer that starts in the ovaries, the pair of female reproductive organs located in the pelvis. The ovaries have two functions: to produce eggs and female hormones (chemicals that control the way certain cells or organs function). Ovarian cancer occurs when cells in the ovary become abnormal and divide without control or order. Cancer cells can invade and destroy the tissue around them. They can also extend away from the tumor and to form new tumors in other body parts.
Who is at risk?
It is estimated that in the United States, more than 25,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1999 and more than 14,000 die from the disease. The exact causes of ovarian cancer are unknown. However, studies show that the following factors may increase the likelihood of developing this disease:
Family history. The first-degree relatives (mother, daughter, sister) of a woman who has had ovarian cancer are at increased risk of developing this cancer. The risk is especially high if two or more first-degree relatives of a woman had the disease. A family history of breast cancer or colon is also associated with an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Age. The probability of developing ovarian cancer increases as a woman ages. Most ovarian cancers occur in women over age 50, with more risk for women over 60 years old.
Motherhood. Women who have never had children are more likely to develop ovarian cancer than women who have had them. In fact, the more children they had, the lower the chances of developing ovarian cancer.
Personal History. Women who have had breast cancer or colon, are more likely to develop ovarian cancer than women who have not had these diseases.
Fertility treatment. The fertility treatment with certain drugs that trigger ovulation is associated with a probability higher than average of developing ovarian cancer.
Talc. Some studies suggest that women who have used talc in the genital area for many years may have an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. However, more research is needed to understand this potential risk factor.
Is there a test to detect ovarian cancer early?
The sooner it is detected and ovarian cancer, the better the chance for recovery. But ovarian cancer is hard to detect early. Many times, women with ovarian cancer have no symptoms or have very mild symptoms until the disease is at an advanced stage. Scientists are studying ways to detect ovarian cancer before symptoms develop.
A large-scale study, known as the study of early detection of cancer of the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian or PLCO study seeks to determine whether certain evidence will reduce the number of deaths from these cancers. The PLCO trial is currently evaluating the utility of three methods for detecting ovarian cancer.
One is a blood test that measures the level of CA-125, a substance called tumor marker found in the blood often in quantities greater than normal in women with ovarian cancer. This study is also evaluating the effectiveness of a physical examination of the ovaries and a test called a transvaginal ultrasound to detect the disease early.
Transvaginal ultrasound, also known as DVT, is a procedure used to examine the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and bladder. An instrument is inserted into the vagina, and sound waves vibrate the organs inside the pelvic area. These sound waves produce echoes, which uses the computer to create a picture called a sonogram.
Does it cause any symptoms ovarian cancer?
Ovarian cancer usually shows no obvious signs or symptoms until it is advanced development. Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:
- General abdominal discomfort or pain (gas, indigestion, pressure, swelling, bloating, cramps).
- Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or frequent urination.
- Loss of appetite.
- Feeling of fullness even after a light meal.
- Weight gain or loss without just cause.
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding.
These symptoms may be caused by ovarian cancer or by other, less serious conditions. It is important to consult your doctor about any of these symptoms.
How is ovarian cancer diagnosed?
To find the cause of symptoms, the doctor evaluates a woman?s medical history, perform a physical examination and order diagnostic tests. Some of the examinations and tests that may be useful are described below:
Pelvic exam. This includes touching the uterus, vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and rectum to find any abnormality in their shape or size. It is usually done along with the pelvic exam Pap test (common test used to detect cervical cancer). Sometimes this test may detect ovarian cancer, but it is not a reliable way to detect or diagnose ovarian cancer.
Ultrasound. It uses high-frequency sound waves. These waves can not be heard by humans, they point to the ovaries. The pattern of the echoes they produce waves creates a picture called a sonogram. Healthy tissues, fluid-filled cysts and tumors look different on the table.
Analysis of CA-125. It consists of a blood test to measure levels of CA-125, a tumor marker in the blood is usually in amounts above normal in women with ovarian cancer.
Lower abdominal radiograph or barium enema. It is a series of x-rays of the colon and rectum. The photographs are taken after the patient is given an enema with a white, chalky solution containing barium. The barium outlines the colon and rectum on the x-ray, making it easier to see the tumor or other abnormal areas.
Computed tomography (CT scan). It is a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body created by a computer linked to an x-ray machine.
Biopsy. Involves the removal of a tissue sample to be examined under the microscope. A pathologist examines the tissue to make a diagnosis. For tissue, the surgeon performs a laparotomy (incision to open the abdomen).
If cancer is suspected, the surgeon performs an oophorectomy (total excision of the ovary). This is important because, if cancer is present, to cut the outer layer of the ovary to simply remove a tissue sample, maybe cancer cells to escape and spread the disease.
If ovarian cancer is diagnosed, the doctor will want to learn the stage (or extent) of the disease in order to find out whether the cancer has spread and, if so, to what parts of the body. Determining the stage of the disease may involve surgery, x-rays and other methods of making detailed images, and laboratory testing. Knowing the stage of the disease helps the doctor plan treatment.
How is ovarian cancer?
Using different treatments and combinations of treatments to treat ovarian cancer. The plan of treatment for a particular patient depends on several factors, including the stage of the cancer, your age and general health.
Surgery is the treatment for most women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Generally, ovaries, cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes are removed by an operation called a hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (surgical removal of both fallopian tubes and ovaries).
During surgery determining the stage of the disease and usually involves removing lymph nodes (small organs located along the lymph system ducts) Diaphragm tissue samples, omentum (thin tissue that covers the stomach and intestine) and other organs in the abdomen and abdominal fluid. If the cancer has spread, the surgeon usually removes much of the cancer as possible to reduce the amount of cancer that must then be treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy is the use of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells in the body. Most drugs used to treat ovarian cancer are given by injection into a vein (intravenous or IV). There may also be chemotherapy drugs directly into the abdomen (intraperitoneal or IP) via a catheter, a thin tube is placed through the duration of the tratamiento.
Despu?s of chemotherapy is completed, you can make a second look with surgery to examine the abdomen directly. The surgeon may remove fluid and a sample of tissue to see whether anticancer drugs have successfully removed the cancer.
Radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy, involves the use of high energy rays to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy affects the cancer cells only in the treated area. Radiation may come from a machine (external radiation) or from radioactive liquid placed directly into the abdomen through a catheter (intraperitoneal radiation).
Are clinical trials (research studies) for patients with ovarian cancer?
Yes, clinical trials (research studies) to evaluate new ways to treat cancer are an important treatment option for many women with ovarian cancer. In some studies, all patients receive the new treatment. In others, doctors compare different therapies by giving a group of patients a promising new treatment and other standard therapy group (standard).

Maya Apocalypse 2012: Guatemala's Weirdest Museum (PHOTOS)
The museum began 29 years ago when Luis Colmenares, then just a boy, spotted a sliver of pottery amid the dirt as his father dug a new foundation for their home on an island in Lake Peten. The sliver turned out to be a whole cup, and an uncle at the archeological foundation in Guatemala city confirmed it to be a roughly 2,000-year-old relic of the Maya Empire. Luis and his father kept digging.
The dozens of shockingly intact objects they unearthed are now on display in what must be the most unorthodox collection of Meso-American artifacts on display anywhere in the world. Rather than selling or donating the pieces, the Colmenares built a museum on their island, dubbed "Radio Peten" by locals. Later, Luis added a regular feature to the pop sets he DJs on 88.5 FM, 1460 AM.
"We ask locals to bring the things they find in their villages here on the radio," says Colmenares.
The reaction has been fairly stunning. The Lake Peten region of Guatemala is ruin-rich, and the island of Flores, which sits a half-mile away from tiny Radio Peten, was one of the last Mayan holdouts -- Cortes saw it and, uncharacteristically, left it unsacked, which it continued to be until 1697. This is why the one-room museo is full to the brim with millennia-old pots, obsidian blades and elaborate carvings.
Displays of priceless artifacts bump up against displays of a far more personal nature. A painting of Colmenares' grandmother, who emigrated to Guatemala from southern Spain hangs above a phonograph that still holds the 24-record set she used to learn English. A rifle hangs from outdated radio equipment. A picture of Colmenare's father, looking every inch the lothario, watches over a gap-toothed skull compressed to conform to the Mayan standard of beauty.
Luis himself conforms rather neatly to the expectations of a radio host. He is pale, doubly so by Guatemalan standards, and has thick glasses that compliment his nervous manner. His massive black Labrador mix follows him constantly, occasionally standing on its back legs to kiss its master's face. Though Colmenares is proud of his collection and quite knowledgeable, he insists that it is nothing and pleads ignorance. But he is a man with a big idea that shouldn't be as radical as it is.
"It is important to keep the Mayan culture here because they don't even teach about this in school," Colmenares says. "Maya come from towns like Quetzaltenango and they've never seen stuff like this. They're excited to touch these things. Artisans come to and look at the designs so they can create similar things to sell to the tourists."
The tourists aren't far away. Flores, which is connected to the charmless, grey streets of Santa Elena by a thin causeway, is the consummate backpacker town. The inns and hostels are painted in riotous colors and someone has wandered through the myriad bars posting a notice inviting travelers to a attend an ayahausca ceremony on December 21, the purported date of the apocalypse. "Stuck in Lodi Again" booms from tuk-tuk mounted speakers not tuned to Radio Peten and missionless Missionaries sun themselves on the lakeside boulevard.
Colmenares was hoping that the tourist boom surrounding the apocalypse would bring enough visitors to the museum that admission fees -- roughly $2.50 a pop -- would add up and his brother could open a lodge he's built behind stelae displayed on the grounds. On the day I visited, only two other foreigners had made the rather involved trip, which involves paying a boatman or renting a pirogue, as I did, and tottering nervously across the lukewarm lake.
"I want to keep these thing because it is best for all this area," Colmenares say. "My family was not Maya, but now my brother is marrying a girl who is part so we will be too. Everyone here gets some eventually. It is all of our history."
He plays long notes one tiny whistle shaped like a monkey that was carved before Christ died then signals the end of the song with the blast of a sun-bleached conch. It is 1:45 and he has to be on the radio. He jogs toward the base of the tower that rises from the middle of the island, his dog chasing him and puts on that Pitbull song. The door to his museum swings open and sticks that way.

Holiday Recipe & Booze of the Month! - GiustoGusto - One Dude's ...
There are a lot of things to celebrate this week: GiustoGusto turns 3, another installment of Booze of the Month, and the holiday vacation officially begins. Apparently there?s some sort of Mexican-Apocalypse-thing that?s happening this week too, but that?s on the back burner. I have way too many things to eat and drink to worry about the armageddon, Bruce Willis will handle that ish for everyone.
To kickstart the holiday festivities I thought I?d share an oldie but goodie from the Italian-American guidebook to Christmas: Stuffed Shells.
Any combination of Marinara, Ricotta, and Pasta is going to be delicious, from Manicotti to Baked Ziti or the all-encompasing Timbale. But Stuffed Shells, or Conchiglione, hold a special place in my heart. Both my mother and father?s families had their own versions, as well as my in-laws, but no matter how you put the three together Stuffed Shells were always on the Christmas Day table. Baking trays packed tight with lightly golden pasta shells glistening with oily marinara and oozing ricotta, piping hot and sprinkled with fresh basil. It?s a small labor of love, a couple hours at least, but the holidays for us are as much about the preparation as they are the dining.
Grab a Negroni & some counter space and lets make this happen:
Stuffed Shells (Conchiglione Ripieni)
serves 4
1 lbs Large Shell Pasta (conchiglione)
1 large can San Marzano Tomatoes
4 Garlic Cloves, smashed
2lbs Ricotta
1lb Spinach
1 Cup Pecorino Romano, grated
1 Handful Chopped Basil
2 Eggs
E.V. Olive Oil, Salt, Pepper, Red Chile Flakes
To start, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
On another burner while you wait for the water to boil, place a large saut? pan on med-high heat. Add enough oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan and add your smashed garlic. Lightly brown the garlic on all sides, then add your crushed San Marzano tomatoes, basil and season to taste. Reduce heat and allow the sauce to simmer until you?re ready to coat your pasta.
When your water comes to a boil add all of the spinach and cook until just wilted, 1 minute tops. Drain and set aside to continue draining.
Add your pasta to the same boiling water and cook until al dente, 7-8 minutes. Drain, toss with a little olive oil to keep from sticking and set aside.
When the spinach has cooled, squeeze out as much water as humanly possible and chop roughly. In a large bowl combine the ricotta, spinach, pecorino, 2 eggs, plenty of black pepper and a large pinch of chile flakes. Whip with a spoon to combine until fluffy.
In a large baking tray spread enough of the red sauce to thinly coat the bottom so the pasta doesn?t stick. Using a spoon, and pinching the flat ends of each pasta shell, fill each shell with the ricotta mix. Add just enough to fit inside the shell, not spilling out over the top.
When all of the shells have been filled and line the baking tray in one layer, spoon a little of the red sauce on top of each shell but do not completely cover them with sauce.
Sprinkle with a little extra pecorino and bake for 25-30 minutes on 450 or until the sauce becomes sticky and the top of the shells just start to turn golden brown.
Serve with an extra drizzle of good olive oil, chopped basil, and grated pecorino.

And who could forget everyone?s favorite: Booze of the Month!
Caffe? Corretto means simply ? Coffee Corrected.? A truer fact I could not find. In Italy, this typically means a shot of espresso served with a tazo (or tiny cup) of either Grappa, Limoncello, or more common after dinner ? Sambuca. This richly-licorice flavored elixer is not subtle, so if you?re no fan of black licorice steer clear. However, after taking a few sips of your espresso and then combining the Sambuca in with the rest yields a strong, aromatic punch to the tastebuds that helps refresh the palate after a holiday gorging.
The following is more of a routine than a recipe, but it?s a free country so drink as you will:
Caffe? Corretto alla Sambuca
1 Shot Espresso (or a double if you?re feeling faint)
1 Shot Sambuca (chilled in the freezer)
3 Espresso Beans
1 Lemon Peel
1 tsp Sugar
Pull your espresso shot and add the sugar and lemon peel. Stir until sugar?s melted.
Fill a shot glass with your chilled Sambuca and drop in the 3 espresso beans. This is a good-luck charm for the upcoming new year, but it also looks cool as the beans always meet in the middle of the shot.
Sip your espresso until it?s roughly half-empty, then add your Sambuca and stir to combine the two. Remove the lemon peel and beans, sip and repeat! The strong flavors of chocolatey espresso and fragrant licorice jolt you back from your reclined position just in time for dessert.

Marian Wright Edelman: Dear God! When Will It Stop?
The horrendous news from Newtown, Connecticut has pierced our hearts. Allegedly, a black-clad man in his 20s armed with two semi-automatic handguns entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School and made an elementary school for kindergartners through fourth graders the scene of the worst mass shooting in a public school in American history. Reportedly, 20 children were shot and killed, and seven adults were shot and killed. We don?t yet know how many were wounded. We do know dozens of parents are experiencing the worst nightmare any parent could imagine. We do know more than 500 young children in the school are traumatized.
Once again we are faced with unspeakable horror from gun violence and once again we are reminded that there is no safe harbor for our children. How young do the victims have to be and how many children need to die before we stop the proliferation of guns in our nation and the killing of innocents? The most recent statistics reveal 2,694 children and teens were killed by gunfire in 2010; 1,773 of them were victims of homicide and 67 of these were elementary school-age children. If those children and teens were still alive they would fill 108 classrooms of 25 each. Since 1979 when gun death data were first collected by age, a shocking 119,079 children and teens have been killed by gun violence. That is more child and youth deaths in America than American battle deaths in World War I (53,402) or in Vietnam (47,434) or in the Korean War (33,739) or in the Iraq War (3,517). Where is our anti-war movement to protect children from pervasive gun violence here at home?
This slaughter of innocents happens because we protect guns before children and other human beings. Our hearts and prayers go out to the parents and teachers and children and the entire Newtown community that has been ripped apart by each bullet shot this morning. We know from past school shootings and the relentless killing of children every day that Newtown families and the community will never be the same. The Newtown families who lost children today will never be the same. The families of the teachers who were killed will never be the same. Every child at the Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning will never be the same.
Each and all of us must do more to stop this intolerable and wanton epidemic of gun violence and demand that our political leaders do more. We can?t just talk about it after every mass shooting and then do nothing until the next mass shooting when we profess shock and talk about it again. The latest terrible tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School is no fluke. It is a result of the senseless, immoral neglect of all of us as a nation to protect children instead of guns and to speak out against the pervasive culture of violence and proliferation of guns in our nation. It is up to us to stop these preventable tragedies.
We have so much work to do to build safe communities for our children and need leaders at all levels of government who will stand up against the NRA and for every child?s right to live and learn free of gun violence. But that will not happen until mothers and grandmothers, fathers and grandfathers, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, and neighbors and faith leaders and everybody who believes that children have a right to grow up safely stand up together and make a mighty ruckus as long as necessary to break the gun lobby?s veto on common sense gun policy. Our laws and not the NRA must control who can obtain firearms.
It is way past time to demand enactment of federal gun safety measures, including:
- Ending the gun show loophole that allows private dealers to sell guns without a license and avoid required background checks;
- Reinstating the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004;
- And requiring consumer safety standards for all guns.
Why in the world do we regulate teddy bears and toy guns and not real guns that have snuffed out tens of thousands of child lives? Why are leaders capitulating to the powerful gun lobby over the rights of children and all people to life and safety?
I hope these shocking Connecticut child sacrifices in this holy season will force enough of us at last to stand up, speak out, and organize with urgency and persistence until the president, members of Congress, governors and state legislators put child safety ahead of political expediency. And we must aspire and act together to become the world leader in protecting children against gun violence rather than leading the world in child victims of guns. Every child?s life is sacred and it is long past time that we protect all our children.
Albert Camus, Nobel Laureate, speaking at a Dominican monastery in 1948 said: ?Perhaps we cannot prevent this world from being a world in which children are tortured. But we can reduce the number of tortured children.? He described our responsibility as human beings ?if not to reduce evil, at least not to add to it? and ?to refuse to consent to conditions which torture innocents.? It is time for a critical mass of Americans to refuse to consent to the killing of children by gun violence.

Second Screen Killer App: Predictive Gaming is the - Huffington Post
While many broadcasters are experimenting with the use of the "second screen," meaning mobile devices which provide accompanying content to TV shows, Turner Sports might have found something of killer app in the emerging medium with predictive gaming around sports programming.
In this video interview wiht Beet.TV, Peter Scott, VP of Emerging Media for Turner Sports, says that the network's use of predictive gaming apps round the NBA and other programming could be the "future of sports television" by involving fans and providing an entirely new advertising opportunity for big brands including State Farm Insurance.

Choo to Reds, Bauer to Indians in 3-team trade
CLEVELAND (AP) ? Shin-Soo Choo didn't want to be part of the Indians' future. So they're moving on without him.
Cleveland traded the talented outfielder to the Cincinnati Reds and acquired prized pitching prospect Trevor Bauer from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night in a three-team deal involving nine players.
The Indians obtained center fielder Drew Stubbs from Cincinnati and received Bauer, the No. 3 pick in the 2011 draft, along with right-handers Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw from the Diamondbacks.
"This is a trade that can impact our team not only for 2013, but for the future," Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. "Three of the players we acquired we will have under control for at least the next three seasons."
Cleveland shipped Choo, infielder Jason Donald and about $3.5 million to the Reds, while sending left-handed reliever Tony Sipp and first baseman Lars Anderson to Arizona.
The Diamondbacks also received shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius from Cincinnati.
Choo, primarily a right fielder for Cleveland since he was acquired from Seattle in 2006, will play center and bat leadoff for Cincinnati.
"It was very difficult giving up home-grown talent, but we think Choo can fill the missing parts in our lineup both offensively and defensively," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement. "He is an exciting player, and we expect him to set the table."
Dealing Choo was almost a necessity for the Indians. He was entering the final year of his contract and is eligible for free agency in 2013. The Indians have not been able to work out a deal with agent Scott Boras, who has turned down several extensions in recent years.
The 30-year-old Choo, from South Korea, batted .283 with 16 homers and 67 RBIs in 155 games last season. He had been considered a core player for the Indians, who collapsed in August and finished 68-94 ? two games out of last place in the AL Central.
"It was really tough," Antonetti said of trading Choo. "I talked with Shin-Soo tonight and expressed my profound appreciation for his professionalism. He is always one of the first to arrive for workouts, whether it is spring training or just a game."
With plenty of power in the middle of the lineup, Cincinnati has lacked a prototypical leadoff man to get on base consistently in front of sluggers such as Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Ryan Ludwick and Todd Frazier. Brandon Phillips, who previously batted cleanup at times, was pressed into leadoff duty last season despite a .322 career on-base percentage.
Choo can also hit the ball out of the ballpark, but his .381 career OBP fits the bill at the top of the order. He also had 43 doubles and 21 steals this year.
The speedy Stubbs has played center exclusively for the Reds, helping them win NL Central titles in 2010 and 2012. He batted .213 with 14 homers and 40 RBIs last season, striking out 166 times in 493 at-bats. He has 100 stolen bases over the past three years, including 30 in 2012.
Antonetti said the team hasn't decided where Stubbs will play. Michael Brantley played center for the Indians last season, but has also spent some time in left.
"In Drew Stubbs, we received a great defensive player who brings an element of speed and power to our lineup," Antonetti said. "We are happy with the job Michael Brantley did for us in center field, but Drew is one of the best out there. He brings a great deal of athleticism to our team."
Bauer, one of baseball's top pitching prospects, became the first member of the 2011 draft class to reach the majors and went 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA in four starts for Arizona this year. The 21-year-old right-hander struggled with his control, compiling 13 walks and 17 strikeouts in 16 1-3 innings.
Bauer spent most of the season in the minors, going a combined 12-2 with a 2.42 ERA in 22 starts at Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno. He had 157 strikeouts and 61 walks while allowing 107 hits in 130 1-3 innings.
"We are getting a young pitcher with a ton of potential," Antonetti said. "He can be a top-of-the-rotation guy with development. He is somebody we have been interested in for a long time, since he was at UCLA."
Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said he was sorry to part with Bauer, but "we're fortunate to have a lot of pitching depth."
The 22-year-old Gregorius, considered a defensive whiz, spent last season with Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Louisville before appearing in eight games for the Reds. He hit a combined .265 with seven homers and 54 RBIs in 129 minor league games, adding 21 doubles and 11 triples while scoring 70 runs.
The Diamondbacks have been looking for a shortstop to replace Stephen Drew, traded to Oakland in August after returning from a serious ankle injury. They were thought to be interested in Indians All-Star Asdrubal Cabrera, though Towers wouldn't comment on that.
Towers said Gregorius reminds him "of a young Derek Jeter." Gregorius will go to spring camp and compete for the starting job in the big leagues.
Arizona completed a $15.5 million, two-year contract with right-hander Brandon McCarthy on Tuesday and also acquired reliever Heath Bell from Miami earlier this offseason. Towers said those additions make it "highly unlikely" the team will trade slugger Justin Upton.
