St. Raphael the Archangel Church Brings Blessing and Honor to God

Sept. 29 is the universal feast day of archangels Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. This year it also marks the second anniversary of the cornerstone blessing of St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church by Cardinal Francis George of Chicago.

St. Raphael the Archangel Church will look like magnificent traditional churches of old because two beautiful but now-closed Chicago churches are providing much of the exterior and interior elements.

This new edifice is rising on 150 acres in the village of Old Mill Creek in Lake County, Ill. The church sits on the major thoroughfare of Route 45 near the Wisconsin border.

Among his several patronages, as the Book of Tobit confirms, St. Raphael is the patron of travelers and of happy meetings. In this case, it can apply to the happy meeting of this edifice with features from St. John of God and St. Peter Canisius parishes, which are traveling 60 miles north to create this new church with old elements.

This trio?s happy meeting began five years ago, when St. Raphael ? the first new parish formed in the Chicago Archdiocese since 1999 ? had its first Mass in a barn-turned-temporary chapel.

"I thought St. Raphael would be a very fine patron," founding pastor Father John Jamnicky says.

Father Jamnicky is no stranger to ministering to people on the move. In his priesthood, he has served as chaplain of Chicago O?Hare International Airport and as national director of the Apostleship of the Sea at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Cardinal George appointed him not only as founding pastor of this new parish but also as chaplain for nearby Waukegan Regional Airport and the maritime ministries of Lake County.

?

1 Parish From 2

Once the twin steeples of this magnificent church are completely re-assembled to their 140-foot height, they are anticipated to be the tallest structures in Lake County. The steeples came from St. John of God Church in Chicago.

Father Jamnicky salvaged furnishings and artifacts from churches that were closing in the archdiocese for inclusion in St. Raphael?s temporary chapel.

"We got the idea ? maybe we could do this for the permanent church," Father Jamnicky adds. "So many things were neglected and being destroyed that are part of the patrimony of the Church."

St. John of God was one of the closed edifices in the archdiocese. Built in 1918 on Chicago?s South Side as a Polish parish, it was closed for nearly 20 years.

With the cardinal?s permission, Father Jamnicky had engineers inspect the building and its distinctive Renaissance beauty. The side walls were not great, and the roof was caving. But the magnificent limestone stone facade, twin steeples, four rotundas, narthex, rose window, porticos, doors, hardware and more were in good condition. Disassembly and reassembly in Old Mill Creek seemed possible ? all for only $2 million.

This is a chance at a new life for St. John of God ? which was named one of the most beautiful churches in Chicago; it was designed by architect Henry Schlacks, founder of the architecture department at the University of Notre Dame.

Also having a chance for a new life is St. Peter Canisius Church on Chicago?s North Avenue. Opened in 1935, the parish closed in 2007.

"Again, it was providential," Father Jamnicky says. "The interior was shaped just like St. John of God. Everything was in perfect condition."

Now, St. Raphael?s is receiving St. Peter?s beautiful Italian marble main and side altars, reredos and arches, as well as all the marble statuary, lovely oak pews with graceful Romanesque arched tops, and the superlative Tyrolean stained-glass windows from Innsbruck, Austria.

The hand of Providence is evident everywhere in this endeavor. Three bells graced only one of the original limestone steeples, but Father Jamnicky wanted bells in both steeples. Then he learned of another Chicago church whose unstable steeple had to be razed. It had three bells, so he bought them.

Then the business manager overseeing construction told the priest: "You can?t just put three bells together with three others because they have to be tuned together; otherwise, their sounds will clash."

Bell experts weighed in. Father Jamnicky shared their report: "If you were buying six new bells, you could not have purchased a more perfect combination. These six bells together will ring like Westminster chimes."

Again, God?s providence was at work in other areas, including the new cornerstone.

"It is the main great stone holding up the church," the pastor says. "It has theological meaning and symbolism to it." He looked at St. John of God?s immense cornerstone, which wasn?t supposed to fit. Carved in Latin, the stone proclaims: "Built for the Greater Honor and Glory of God, 1918."

Then a solution appeared. Didn?t St. Raphael provide a solution to both Sarah?s and Tobit?s overwhelming problems? Now that cornerstone makes up a double one ? half of St. John?s is the foundation, and on top of it sits a second cornerstone carved with the name St. Raphael the Archangel and the date of blessing, Sept. 29, 2010.

"We?re building upon the faith of the St. John of God Church community as we?re building the new church of St. Raphael the Archangel," says Father Jamnicky.

Divine providence at work in this project also reflects Raphael?s words in Tobit 12:6: "Bless God and give him thanks before all the living for the good things he has done for you, by blessing and extolling his name in song. Proclaim before all with due honor the deeds of God, and do not be slack in thanking him."

Many former parishioners from St. John of God and St. Peter Canisius were at the cornerstone blessing to see their former churches being renewed this way.

?

New and Old

The exterior side walls of flat stone are new, but built with foresight for future expansion of the present 900-seat capacity church. Already, the parish has nearly 600 families.

Father Jamnicky envisions that the walls can be expanded with wings ? "the wings of St. Raphael."

Besides the main shrine altars to our Blessed Mother and St. Joseph, there will be side shrines to St. Raphael and St. John the Baptist.

Plans call for an enormous statue of St. Raphael the Archangel on the piazza, along with statues of the other six archangels (see Tobit 12:15) on colonnades.

"This project from the beginning, including purchase of land, should end up at $14 million," says Father Jamnicky. "Now we have to raise money to complete the job."

Because of the national prominence, the pastor hopes for donations from people around the country who want to help preserve magnificent churches for future generations. He hopes this effort will be a model for other dioceses. Approximately $4 million is needed to complete the major phase in time for the dedication and consecration by Cardinal George scheduled for Sept. 29, 2013.

"We?re going to see the parish grow because people want to come here," says Jean Mulroney, a founding parishioner. "They appreciate what we?re doing. It?s a very traditional feeling ? what I remember growing up. It?s going to be a masterpiece."

As St. Raphael put it in Tobit 12:11, "One must declare the works of God with due honor." This church surely will.

Apple apologizes for botched iPhone 5 maps app

Apple Maps has caused consumers "frustration," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement today. He pledged that the company would work to improve the maps app on the iPhone 5 and iOS 6.?

Apple has issued a lengthy apology for the botched maps app on the new iPhone 5 and iOS 6 and encouraged users to try out alternative software ? including a Web-based version of Google Maps. In a statement entitled "A Letter To Our Customers Concerning Maps," Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company was "extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers."

Apple would continue to work on improving the Apple Maps app, he added.?

"There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day," Cook wrote in the letter. "In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you."?

Some background: For many years, Google provided the default maps app on the iPhone. But Google, which develops the Android mobile operating system, is increasingly an Apple rival; with iOS 6, Apple decided to boot Google Maps. Unfortunately, as New York Times critic David Pogue has noted, Apple probably realized at some point that "digitally representing every road, building and point of interest is a task of almost unimaginable difficulty."

At times, Apple Maps is perfectly fine. At other times, Apple Maps is a mess. (Or, if you prefer, a?"flop,"?a?"debacle,"?and just plain?"ugly.") It can't find some locations, and its 3-D mapping function turns other landmarks into pixelated mush. Compare that to Google Maps, which even at its most sluggish, was accurate and easy to use. In the statement today, Cook seemed to fully acknowledge the failings of the software.?

More surprisingly, he also suggested that users look elsewhere in their hour of frustration.?"[Y]ou can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the?App Store?like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and?creating an icon?on your home screen to their web app," Cook wrote.?(Waze is pretty good, as it turns out.)

WWSJHD? (What would Steve Jobs have done?) In 2010, of course, Apple was pelted with complaints from users who couldn't get a good signal on their iPhone 4. Jobs eventually called a press conference.?

"This has been blown so out of proportion that it?s incredible," Jobs?said. "We think some of that problem is inherent in most every smartphone, but having said that, we care about every user and we are not going to stop until every user is happy."

It was something short of an apology.

Amanda Nixon: How Breast Cancer Made Me a Yogini

When I entered my first yoga class a few years ago, I never thought in my wildest dreams that one day I would aspire to be a yoga instructor. I distinctly remember my response to my first yoga class: nervous, uncomfortable, and worried I wouldn't be able to accomplish the complex moves. To my surprise, I was immediately calmed by the encouragement and compassion I received from the teacher, who, like me, is a breast cancer survivor.

My entire life I thought yoga was for smelly hippies, fitness buffs, and pretzel-like flexible people. Eww! Gross! I steered clear of those types and assumed I wasn't fit enough to give yoga a whirl myself. But today, I am proud to tell you I am well on my way to receiving my yoga teacher certification.

At the age of 27, I was diagnosed with an extremely rare, aggressive form of breast cancer called Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). Immediately following my diagnosis, my life became a whirlwind of chemotherapy, radiation treatments, a mastectomy and reconstructive surgeries. As a result of my surgeries (and flying on airplanes) I developed a condition called Lymphedema that causes my hand and arm to swell. I desperately needed something to improve not just my body, but my mind and spirit too. My mom and my boss recommended I try yoga.

It wasn't until I stepped foot into my first Cancer Therapy Yoga class that something clicked. Here I was, able to reconnect with my body and focus my mind, surrounded by other beautiful breast cancer survivors. The class was fun, restorative, and gentle enough for beginners. I was in a safe place where I felt accepted, supported, and loved. From then on, I was hooked.

There are numerous studies to support the benefits of exercise and yoga for cancer patients, and I am proof of these. Yoga has helped me manage stress, improve my sleep and digestion, increase my range of motion, reduce pain, and most importantly, stay healthy (aka help avoid a recurrence of breast cancer).

As a firm believer in the power of yoga to fight breast cancer, I recommend the practice to the hundreds of breast cancer survivors I support in my role as survivor outreach advocate at Keep A Breast. Claire Petretti, my yoga for cancer recovery teacher, developed a video to help cancer patients recover from their surgeries and journeys. My appearance in the DVD is an example of my commitment to helping others access yoga even if they are not physically capable of leaving their homes.

During my transition from yoga newbie to yoga teacher, I have had a few key realizations:

1. I love dating my mat. I have a date with my yoga mat each day. My yoga mat would never ask me to "go Dutch" or take me for a "long walk on the beach." All my yoga mat wants to do is support me. Yoga is a personal practice, and I have the opportunity to do whatever work I need each day. This might mean mediation or deep breathing or forward bends or grounding poses. I am my own best teacher.

2. Yoga offers a sense of belonging and unity. Looking around at all of the other teacher trainees, I see a vast range of goals, strength, aspirations, and dreams. My personal goal is to work with breast cancer patients, but we all come to practice, learn, teach, and accept each other as we are. My experiences with breast cancer surgeries and classes are simply my unique contributions.

3. You can smile in yoga postures. Yoga is fun. After a few days of Yoga Vitality and Yoga Delight, or, as I adorningly call them, Tough Yoga classes, I realized how trying to keep up with everyone else caused tension. I decided to ease up. Pay attention to my breathing. Accept myself. I did not need to speed through, compete, or feel inadequate -- that would be counterproductive. I decided to smile instead. This may have turned into a full-blown laugh at times, but just smiling helped me loosen up. I ended up carrying this smile with me throughout the day, which happens to be a fun side effect.

4. We are perfect just the way we are. Each day, each person feels different. I love to be able to reconnect myself to my body. I have had four breast surgeries and surgery to remove my stomach tissue and muscle. My body has a pretty interesting story to tell. Some days it is shouting that narrative, other days whispering it to me. I need to tune in and turn up the volume. Connect with my body. Love my body. Love my boobies. Yoga allows this. Yoga is about easing suffering and accepting self.

5. Yoga on the mat is just as important as yoga off the mat. Since I started teacher training I have a greater awareness of those around me, and how connected we are. Goodness is our true nature, so why not be as good as I can? Speak with yoga lips and see with yoga eyes. We are all pretty awesome people. Yoga has helped me tune in to the important stuff among all the insignificant. I've caught myself thinking, "Is this gossipy?" and "Is this helpful?" more than ever before. I now try to leave the lightest footprint by purchasing only what I really need. I aspire to live my yoga each day.

Namaste,

Amanda Nixon

Ancient burial shroud offers up surprise

Ancient scraps of fabric found in a grave in Denmark are not made of cultivated flax as once believed, but instead are woven from imported wild nettles, suggesting the grave's inhabitant may have traveled far for burial. ?

This discovery, announced Friday in the journal Scientific Reports, casts a new light on the textile trade in Bronze Age Europe, said study researcher Ulla Mannering, an archaeologist at the University of Copenhagen.

"Since the Stone Age, they had very well-developed agriculture and technology for producing linen textiles," Mannering told LiveScience. "So it's really unusual that a society which has established agriculture would also take in material from things that are not of the normal standardized agricultural production" ? in other words, wild plants.

A luxurious shroud
The soft and shiny fabric dates back to between 940 B.C. and 750 B.C., making it about 2,800 years old. It was discovered in Voldtofte, Denmark, at a rich Bronze Age burial ground called Lusehoj. The Bronze Age ran from about 3200 B.C. to 600 B.C. in Europe.

The fabric was wrapped around a bundle of cremated remains in a bronze urn. It was a luxurious piece of material, Mannering said. [ 10 Weird Ways We Deal With the Dead ]

"The fibers we get from the European nettle are very, very fine and soft and shiny, and we often say this is a sort of prehistoric silk textile," Mannering said. (Silk, made from insect cocoons, is known for its shimmery texture.)

Previous analysis pegged the Danish fabric as woven from flax, a plant widely cultivated in the region. But along with nanophysicist Bodil Holst of the University of Bergen in Norway, Mannering and her colleagues used advanced methods to reanalyze the scraps of cloth. By studying the fiber orientation as well as the presence of certain crystals found in plants, the researchers were able to learn that the fabric is not flax at all, but nettle, a group of plants known for the needlelike stingers that line their stems and leaves.

Nor is the nettle local, Mannering said. Different soil regions contain different variations of elements. The variation of one of these elements, strontium, found in the fabric, was not local to Denmark, suggesting the plants the textile was made from grew elsewhere.

There are a few regions that match the strontium profile, the researchers found, but the most likely candidate is southwest Austria. The bronze burial urn holding the remains is from Austria, Mannering said, and it makes sense that the fabric might be too.

A well-traveled man?
Despite these imported grave goods, the remains appear to be those of a Danish man, Mannering said. The personal objects in the grave, such as two razors, suggest he was a Scandinavian, albeit perhaps a well-traveled one, she said.

"Maybe he died in Austria and was wrapped in this Austrian urn and Austrian textile and was brought back to Denmark in this condition and then put in a big burial mound," Mannering said. "The personal objects that were placed inside the urn together with this textile and the bones indicate that he is a male of Scandinavian origin, but it doesn't mean that he couldn't have died abroad."

Bronze Age Europeans lived an agricultural life and traded many goods with one another, especially the bronze that gave the era its name, Mannering said. The nettle fabric may have been an ancient luxury good for Bronze Age elite, she said.

"It shows that they also knew how to get fibers from wild plants, and they wanted these fibers probably because of their very different and unique appearance," she said.

Iranian Lawyer, Aria Vatankhah, Discusses OFAC's New Regulations Affecting Most Transactions Related To Iran

Unless licensed by OFAC, goods, services, or technology may NOT be exported, re-exported, sold or supplied, directly or indirectly, from the United States or by a U.S. person, wherever located, to Iran or the Government of Iran.

(PRWEB) September 28, 2012

The United States Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (?OFAC?) administers the nation?s sanctions programs through the burden of both criminal and civil penalties and the blocking of property and benefit under the authority of the United States.

Iranian Lawyer Aria Vatankhah says: "The rules and measures for complying with these sanctions are difficult and tiresome. Individuals who are in conflict with OFAC administered sanctions, possibly have no idea that they or their business are at the risk of OFAC freezes their assets, fines them, or worst of all, face criminal charges."

Given the wide application of these regulations, individuals and businesses can be targeted by simple involvement with others who have been red-flagged by OFAC. Whether you are a landlord renting property to someone who has been placed on OFAC?s Specially Designated National List, a graduate student seeking to travel to Cuba, or a foreign lawyer providing legal services (Except immigration lawyer providing immigration and naturalization services) to a sanctioned, you are at risk.

If you are a U.S. person, or own property or interests under the authority of the United States, and have dealings with anyone from the following countries: Belarus, Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria or are possibly associated with individuals or entities engaged in terrorism, you may be at risk.

In general, unless licensed by OFAC, goods, services, or technology may NOT be exported, re-exported, sold or supplied, directly or indirectly, from the United States or by a U.S. person, wherever located, to Iran or the Government of Iran.

These regulations apply to:

1.???? All U.S. citizens;

2.???? All U.S. permanent residents (green card holders);

3.???? All U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent residents located outside the United States;

4.???? All U.S. incorporated entities and their foreign branches;

5.???? All foreign subsidiaries owned and controlled by U.S. companies;

6.???? All persons or entities within the United States.

These regulation apply to all U.S. persons mentioned above wherever located. Furthermore, a U.S. person may NOT export from the U.S. any goods, technology or services, if the person knows or has reason to know such items are intended specifically for supply, transshipment or re-exportation to Iran.

The United States government is absolutely and strictly enforcing these laws. There are various Iranians and Iranian-Americans being prosecuted criminally and civilly at the present time. In fact, the U.S. Department of Justice sought and obtained an enhancement of criminal and civil penalties of Iran sanctions from the U.S. Congress in October of 2007 to a maximum of 20 years per violation. Civil penalties were enhanced to the greater of $250,000 per transaction or twice the amount of the transaction.

Furthermore, most transactions related to Iran are prohibited by the Iranian Transactions Regulations (I.T.R.) unless licensed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of Treasury. Sale of any personal or real property in Iran is prohibited unless a specific LICENSE is obtained prior to such a sale. This prohibition applies to any real property; whether acquired by gift, inherited property or acquired long before the enactment of Iran sanctions.

?U.S. persons, including foreign branches of U.S. depository institutions and trading companies, are prohibited from engaging in any transactions, including purchase, sale, transportation, swap, financing, or brokering transactions related to goods or services of Iranian origin or services owned or controlled by the Government of Iran.?

Also it should be noted that If an individual?s name is on any real property in Iran, you will need a specific license before you can sell the property. However, if there was a probate proceeding in Iran and you have inherited an interest in real property in Iran, you may not need a specific license, and may be qualified to use ?General License B? to receive the funds in the U.S.

Transactions ordinarily incident to travel to or from Iran are exempt and authorized. Included are payment of living expenses and acquisition of goods and services for personal use and arrangement or facilitation of such travel including air, sea or land voyages.

For relocating in Iran, taking (exporting) household and personal effects for family use are authorized if the articles have been actually used by said family members (not intended for use by others or for sale nor otherwise prohibited).

Bringing (importing) Iranian-origin household and personal effects for personal or family use of persons arriving in the United States are authorized, if such articles have been actually used abroad by such person or by other family members. They must not be intended for any other person, nor for sale, and must not be otherwise prohibited.

Iranian Attorney, Aria Vatankhah advises that "before OFAC catch you, you should comply with the OFAC?s sanctions rule and protect yourself from possible consequences." Correct compliance with the sanctions can be accomplished, if knowledgeable and experienced attorney is retained.

At Aria Law Group, Aria Vatankhah, an Iranian Lawyer has the compelling experience in applying general and specific OFAC license when it is required by different agencies.

NASA offers opportunity to use communications testbed on space station

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Want to be a part of International Space Station research? Here's your chance. NASA is offering opportunities for academia, industry and government agencies to develop and carry out research and technology demonstrations on the space station using the newly installed Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Testbed.

These opportunities will allow researchers to develop new software according to the Space Telecommunications Radio Standard, or STRS, architecture for radios and reconfigure how radios communicate in space.

The SCaN Testbed is a communications, navigation and networking demonstration platform based on the STRS. The experimental platform began its initial checkout activities on the space station Aug. 13, and will operate for at least three years.

Experiment developers will provide software components to the STRS repository and enable future hardware platforms to use common reusable software modules.

The new testbed is composed of three STRS-compliant, software-defined radios to be operated in space, said Richard Reinhart, principal investigator of the SCaN Testbed at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. "This flexible testbed will allow researchers to develop new software according to the STRS architecture for the radios and reconfigure how the radios communicate on-orbit, to explore new concepts for future missions. Once proven, this new capability will enable greater science return from future NASA missions."

There are two opportunities (http://spaceflightsystems.grc.nasa.gov/SOPO/SCO/SCaNTestbed/Candidate/) to use the testbed on the station.

The SCaN Testbed Experiment Opportunity invites industry and government agencies to enter into Space Act Agreements with NASA to use the SCaN Testbed on space station. The SCaN Testbed Cooperative Agreement Notice invites academia to develop proposals to use the orbiting laboratory's SCaN Testbed research capabilities. NASA expects these first industry, government agency, and university demonstrations to take place by late 2013 or early 2014.

"These two announcements of opportunity provide industry, academia and government agency experimenters a unique service and facility to develop and field the latest communications, navigation and networking technologies not only in the laboratory, but also in the dynamic space environment," said David Irimies, deputy project manager of the SCaN Testbed at Glenn. "Investigators will gain valuable flight experience, raise the technology maturity level of their applications by operating within the space environment, and demonstrate future mission capabilities for a potentially key role in future NASA missions."

Lowering Your Risk At Heart Health And Live A Healthy Life

Lowering Your Risk At Heart Health And Live A Healthy Life

LAST Year the American Heart Association (AHA) released their recommendations for maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet and fitness. The recommendations take into account factors such as food, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use and weight. They?re set to reduce heart disease and increase heart health.

The guidelines are not only for the masses, but for the food industry, which should also be helping people achieve a healthy lifestyle. There are put in the place to inform the population of the latest diet and fitness news and recommendations. By following them, you can lower your risk for heart disease and be on the road to better and healthier life.

1. Calorie intake

The new guidelines state that it is important to balance calorie intake with physical activity to maintain a healthy body weight. They suggest you be aware of how many calories you need each day. Take time to learn how many calories are in the foods you eat. For a week, monitor all your food and figure out what to add and what to rid of. Also the amount of calories you take in should not just be based on your weight and gender, but should also be based on your amount of physical activity.

2. Reduce portion sixes

Nutritionist Susan Burke explains that a 35year old woman who does about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day should be eating around 6 ounces of grains each day (based on a 2,000 calorie diet). ?There is 1 ounce of grains in ? cup cooked pasta and 1 ounce in a sluice of bread,? she says. ?So between a sandwich and a cup of pasta you have already reached 4 of your 6 ounces.?

If you go to any typical Italian restaurant, you will find yourself served about four cups of cooked, pasta, which is eight ounces of grains! Not sure what portions you should be eating? Check out http://www.mypyramid.gov. Using your weight, age and physical-activity level, the site can chart the exact amount of grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat and beans you eat daily.

3. Incorporate exercise

The guidelines suggest aiming for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week. E-Diets Chief Fitness Pro Raphael formed there to five times per week for 20 to 45 minutes. One should work within their target heart-rate range (a heart-rate monitor will automatically calculate the range). Weight training should b performed tow to three times per week for approximately 20 to 40 minutes?.

4. Change the way you eat

The new recommendations say to ?eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables?. Susan suggest a diet rich in colors, such as dark green (spinach), red (tomatoes) and orange (pumpkin). Also, eat whole grains as opposed to processed white flour (such as whole-wheat bread instead of white bread). They also suggest high-fiber foods that can aid overall digestion. The health benefits fruits and vegetables provide, come from the fact that they are packed with essential vitamins and minerals.

?A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants has been shown to fight cancer and other illnesses,? Susan says. Not to mention the fact that fiber in fruits and vegetables help maintain energy levels and aid your digestion system. By getting your five servings of fruits and vegetables a day you will be on the track to a healthier life!

5. Just add fish

The AHA recommends eating fish at least twice a week. The best fishes to choose are salmon, trout, and herring; they are rich in heat healthy omega-3fats. ?Fish are low in saturated fat and high in good fats,? Susan says. ?Omega-3 fats promote immunity, reduce-cholesterol, are linked to lower heart disease, and have been shown to enhance brain function?.

Just make sure your fish isn?t fried!

6. Milk your diet

But only use low-fat or non fat dairy products. For instance, dairy products such as low-fat cottage cheese and low-fat yogurts provide a powerful punch of protein and calcium. ?Studies show that people who eat two servings a day of low-fat yogurt are able to better maintain their weight,? Susan says.

7. Keep your protein lean

By this the AHA Means to eat lean in meat and poultry without skin. So for all of you red meat eaters, its time to cut back! They also suggest alternative protein sources such as soy and other vegetable protein sources. ?Egg whites are great, also potatoes, legumes, beans, nuts and hummus,? Susan says. ?Make a baked potato topped with cottage cheese and salsa and you have a healthy, filling meal?.

8. Reduces fat

It is important to limit foods with hydrogenated fats or partially hydrogenated fats such as fried foods, cookies and salty snacks. AHA also suggests limiting ?saturated fat to less than 7 percent of calories, Trans fat to less 1 per cent of calories, and cholesterol to less than 300 milligram?s a day.? Trans. fat is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, because it raises the levels of total blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (?bad? cholesterol) and it can also lower HDL (?good? cholesterol). It has also contributed to blocked arteries, insulin resistance, and Type 2 diabetes.

9. Reduce Sugar

Limit foods and beverages with added sugar such as soda or juices. Try to add more water to your diet rather than empty calories.

10. Reduce your salt intake

The AHA suggests using less salt and choosing foods lower in salt. What makes a food high in sodium? A food containing more than 480milligrammes of sodium is considered high. One-cup of vegetable soup contains around 820mg of sodium, and 3 oz of lean roasted ham can contain upward of a 1,000 mg.

?Salt is not only used for taste, (but also) used as a preservative,? Susan says. ?And processed foods are loaded of with preservatives. So beware the salt shaker but also beware of overly processed foods such as bologna, canned soups and frozen foods.?

11. Moderate alcohol

Dink alcohol in moderation. The AHA says ?no more than two drinks a day for men, one d rink a day for women.?

12. Eat out right

When you eat out, try to follow the recommendations listed above and keep portion sizes reasonable.

?Dinning out can be dangerous unless you choose wisely,? Susan says. ?Don?t be shy you are the customer, and the customer is always right. Ask for everything on the side so you are in control of how much you are eating. Also, look for key words such as broiled, baked and grilled? avoid fried or crispy foods.

13. Quit Smoking

The evidence that tobacco increases the risk for heart disease, as well as cancer and other serious illnesses is not new. Yet, people still smoke. The AHA recommends against smoking, use of tobacco products and exposure to second hand smoke. The new AHA recommendations are in line with the USDA?s new Food Guide Pyramid (2005) and are emphasizing a healthy lifestyle by making small changes.

Brightest Star Explosion in History Reveals Lonely Supernova

The brightest exploding star ever seen with the naked eye in recorded history apparently experienced a quick and lonely death, a new study reveals.

The discovery, which centered on a star explosion witnessed in the year 1006, suggests that many similar outbursts leave no companion star to accompany their demise.

The most powerful exploding stars in the universeare supernovas, which are bright enough to momentarily outshine their entire galaxies. One type of star explosion, known as a ?Type 1a supernova, occurs when one star pours enough fuel onto a dying companion star known as a white dwarf ?to trigger an extraordinary nuclear explosion.

The new study centered its sights on the supernova SN 1006, which was seen all over Earth in the spring of 1006 above the southern horizon of the night sky, in the constellation Lupus, just south of Scorpio. At its peak, researchers say the supernova, which exploded about 7,100 light-years away, was about one-quarter the brightness of the moon, luminous enough that people could have read by its light at midnight. [Video: How to Make a Supernova]

Explosive deaths of stars

Our sun and more than 90 percent of all stars in our galaxy will one day end up as white dwarfs, which are made up of their dim, fading cores.

There are two ways Type 1a supernovas?are born ? the slow way, which involves a living star dumping gas onto a white dwarf, and the fast way, where two white dwarves merge catastrophically. The slow route would leave the white dwarf's companion behind, while the fast one would effectively blast away discernible traces of either white dwarf.

Whether slow origins of Type 1a supernovas were more commonplace than fast ones or vice versa remained a puzzle. Knowing more about the causes behind these explosions is essential because Type 1a supernovas are key to gauging the rate at which the universe is expanding, which in turn could shed light on why this expansion is apparently accelerating due to a mysterious force called dark energy.

Scientists have tried looking for companion stars of Type 1a supernovas before. One possible instance was Tycho's supernova, SN 1572, one of the few supernovas visible to the naked eye in historical records, although that case remains questioned.

Now a fruitless search for a companion star to the brightest supernova ever seen with the naked eye on Earth suggests this explosion took the fast route.

Brightest supernova post mortem

Using data from the Paranal Observatory in Chile, the researchers combed through the space 16.5 light-years in diameter around SN 1006 and "do not find any star in the surroundings of the supernova remnant to be the possible companion of the progenitor of SN 1006," lead study author Jonay Gonz?lez Hern?ndez, an astrophysicist at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands in Spain, told SPACE.com.

When combined with previous results, these findings suggest less than 20 percent of Type 1a supernovas apparently occur via the slow route.

The scientists detailed their findings in the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature.

As the U.S. presidential election approaches, many voters become voracious consumers of online political news. A tool by a University of Washington researcher tracks whether all those articles really provide a balanced view of the debate and, if not, suggests some sites that offer opinions from the other side of the political spectrum.

Balancer, a free plug-in for Google's Chrome browser, was developed this summer by Sean Munson, a new UW assistant professor of Human Centered Design and Engineering. The tool analyzes a person's online reading habits for a month and calculates the political bias in that behavior. It then suggests sites that represent a different point of view and continues to monitor reading behavior and offer feedback.

"I was a bit surprised when I was testing out the tool to learn just how slanted my own reading behavior was," Munson said. "Even self-discovery is a valuable outcome, just being aware of your own behavior. If you do agree that you should be reading the other side, or at least aware of the dialogue in each camp, you can use it as a goal: Can I be more balanced this week than I was last week?"

The tool classifies more than 10,000 news websites and sections of news websites on a spectrum ranging from far left to far right, using results of previous studies and existing media-bias indices. For a few popular sites the tool also tries to classify individual columnists whose views may be different from those of the overall publication's slant.

If a reader's habits swing to one side of the spectrum, the tool will suggest top news sites on the other side. As more people start using the tool, it will instead suggest articles currently popular among study participants who show a different political bias. People who install the tool get a cartoon of a tightrope walker holding a stick with a red block on one end and a blue block on the other end. If their reading is balanced, the blocks are equal and the stick is level. If not, the stick begins to tilt to one side as the character appears increasingly distressed. The experimental tool is now used by a few dozen people, and researchers hope to recruit more before the November election.

It's not perfect. While the tool tracks all the reading in that Web browser, it misses reading on mobile browsers, through mobile apps and, of course, reading on paper. Munson also would like to develop more targeted ways to classify individual articles and to include more than just Democrat and Republican slants.

The tool was developed at the University of Michigan, where Munson earned his doctorate, with funding from the National Science Foundation. Back when cable news talk shows and the Internet first emerged, Munson said, many experts feared they would fragment news consumers into ideologically specific camps. Instead, it seems some people gravitate toward coverage that reinforces their opinions, he said, while other people use technology to seek out more diverse coverage. His research seeks to understand people's habits and learn how technology might influence their behaviors.

"Depending on whether I wake up on the right or wrong side of the bed I either think that there's this incredible potential for political discussion online, if we could only get it right, or that it's just this huge problem," he said.

Munson started a political blog as a high school student in New Jersey, and in his junior year in college he was awarded press credentials to the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

"My goal with the blog had been to have a dialogue and in the process educate myself about politics," he said. But he found most of his readers already shared his opinions. "In the end I didn't feel like there was any sort of deliberative discussion or progress made, and I hadn't learned a lot in the process." He stopped posting and deleted the blog.

His research now explores ways the Internet might be used to encourage constructive political dialogue, as opposed to the echo chamber of partisan news sites or what he describes as the "appalling cesspool" of some online comments. Munson is also teaching a UW research class this quarter on the Internet and the 2012 election, which will explore topics such as political news reading habits, the spread of political rumors online and the intersection of political preferences and social networking sites.

Google's 'Driverless' Cars Are Now Legal On Calif. Roads ? CBS ...

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) ? Google?s self-driving cars will soon be seen on California roads.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Tuesday, officially making Google?s cars legal to drive on the street.

The company?s ?driverless? cars have computers controlling the pedals and steering wheels, which are guided by cameras, GPS systems and other sensors.

It is required that there is a ?backup? driver behind the wheel at all times to monitor the software and to take over if needed.

Representatives of the company tested these cars in California in Oct. 2010, saying the goal of this technology is to reduce carbon emissions, prevent traffic accidents and free up people?s time.

?According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.2 million lives are lost every year in road traffic accidents. We believe our technology has the potential to cut that number, perhaps by as much as half. We?re also confident that self-driving cars will transform car sharing, significantly reducing car usage, as well as help create the new ?highway trains of tomorrow.? These highway trains should cut energy consumption while also increasing the number of people that can be transported on our major roads,? project leader Sebastian Thrun wrote on Google?s corporate blog on Oct. 9, 2010.
