All You Need To Know Ahead Of World Series Game One
The Boston Red Sox host the St. Louis Cardinals tonight in game one of the World Series. The teams are evenly matched and many expect a tight series. We'll see if playing in an American League park — and having a designated hitter — offers an advantage to either team.

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:
The World Series begins tonight at Boston's Fenway Park where the Red Sox face the St. Louis Cardinals. Now, both teams have won two World Series in the last decade. NPR's Mike Pesca is covering the series for us and he joins us now. Hey there, Mike.
MIKE PESCA, BYLINE: Hello.
CORNISH: So the Red Sox, of course, are not the hapless Sox of yore. They went from worst to first after a disappointing season last year. Now, can we officially, officially, consider them a comeback story?
PESCA: They're going to say that. That's their narrative. I'm not going to get in the way of it. But, you know, last year was a disaster for a lot of reasons. But mostly it was horrible luck. You know, they had almost 1,500 days combined of missed games because of injuries, which sets a record from when they started keeping injuries. And they had a bunch of players on their payroll who were magically lifted off their payroll when the Dodgers offered this amazing trade.
The Red Sox are saying, look at us. Look at how far we've come. If that motivates them, fine. They really were a pretty good team who was beset by horrible injuries last year, and they've gotten on the good side of luck this year.
CORNISH: And what's the story with the Cardinals?
PESCA: The Cardinals don't have those kinds of wax and wanes, though they do have a Wainwright. They're just great. They're just so consistent from top to bottom. The whole organization, most of their players are home grown. They're the model of baseball excellence. Sometimes the fans chirp a little bit about that, but, you know, you have to hand everything to them. Everything that they've accomplished has totally been earned. And most franchises would like to model themselves on what they've put forth.
CORNISH: And you mentioned Wainwright, Adam Wainwright, of course, is pitching for the Cardinals tonight against Jon Lester for Boston. Who holds the edge?
PESCA: It's tough to say. These are the aces and I think, on paper, Wainwright is the better pitcher. Although Fenway Park is, of course, a notoriously tough place to pitch in, especially if you're not used to it. The crazy thing about Wainwright is usually after you pitch a lot of innings, you maybe see a little bit of decline in the velocity of your fastball. Wainwright has (unintelligible) in his back pocket because his fast ball has jumped a mile per hour in the post season.
But still, if you add everything up, you know, Lester's been amazing this post season. You can't really give the edge. I've seen odds, not, you know, Las Vegas odds, but, you know, advance number-crunching statistical odds that put it at a 52 percent chance of winning for the Cardinals and a 48 chance of winning for the Red Sox. And that's just in game one when the Cardinals have their best pitcher going.
CORNISH: Now, anything else we should watch for? I know, of course, tonight, they start in Fenway, which is an American League park, so that means the Red Sox should have the edge, right? I mean, I don't know, David Ortiz will be their designated hitter and not have to play the field.
PESCA: That's true. And so if we look ahead to the middle three games, if there are three games in St. Louis, that will be a little bit rough if they put Ortiz at first base, which they're expected to do. So usually, in a World Series, because of the rules, which is when they play in the American League Park if you have the DH that the American League team has an advantage.
But the weird thing about this game and this series is that Allen Craig is coming back. He hasn't played since September 1st. He's not really that healthy. But because of the designated hitter, he's not going to have to play the field. He gets to bat. And he just absolutely crushes lefties. John Lester is a leftie. So it's an odd thing where overall the DH rule helps the Cardinals, I would say, in this part of the series, more than it helps the Red Sox.
The other thing I'd say is I really do wish they'd find a way to make these games go faster. There was a one-nothing game that lasted almost four hours, which set a record for one-nothing games. A lot of the Boston pitchers just take a lot of time and the hitters step out of the box, and I do think it's hurting the game of baseball.
I mean, I'm not one of these who are saying that football has totally eclipsed baseball. Baseball is doing very well by a lot of measures. Red Sox fans and Cardinal fans are crazy. But if you want to hook the casual kid who's watching in Colorado or Seattle or, you know, Florida, just these slow paced games are not the way to do it. Come on. Let's get on the ball, guys.
CORNISH: That's NPR's Mike Pesca with a preview of game one of the World Series. Mike, thank you.
PESCA: You're welcome.

AT&T won't match T-Mobile's free data on the iPad Air, at least for now
AT&T won't be matching T-Mobile's offer of free wireless data for the iPad Air when the device debuts at the company's stores across the U.S. next month.
AT&T, the country's second-largest cellular carrier, said it will offer a US$100 discount to customers who sign a two-year contract for tablet data service.
For customers who don't want to sign a contract, AT&T will offer recently announced plans costing between $5 for 250MB of data for one day and $50 for 5GB for one month. Those customers won't get the $100 discount.
Subscribers will also be able to add the iPad Air to an existing data plan for an additional $10 per month.
On Wednesday, T-Mobile said it will give tablet owners 200MB of data per month for no cost. Once that's used up, customers will have the option of paying $5 for 500MB of data for one day or $10 for 1GB of data for a week.
T-Mobile, which is the fourth-largest of the country's four major carriers, is aggressively courting customers with cheaper pricing plans. It recently said customers heading overseas would get unlimited 2G data at no additional cost.
A spokesman for AT&T declined to comment on T-Mobile's announcement.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Just days away from WWE Hell in a Cell, WWE Main Event was chock full of action-packed matches, including Goldust battling Seth Rollins!
Seth Rollins def. Goldust
After a string of recent successes with his younger brother Cody Rhodes – including the duo winning the WWE Tag Team Titles – Goldust battled Shield member Seth Rollins on WWE Main Event. Still reeling from the loss of the tag titles to the Rhodes brothers, Rollins was seeking vengeance against the former Intercontinental Champion. . Nevertheless, the younger Rhodes sibling joined his face-painted kin as well in an effort to counteract Roman Reigns and keep the battle between the combatants inside the squared circle.
WWE Main Event photos | Watch Goldust battle Seth Rollins
The Hounds of Justice are certainly rabid and rely on controlled chaos as a unit, but Rollins is certainly a gifted competitor in his own right. Holding his own against Goldust – a Superstar with experience spanning three decades – the Shield member certainly displayed his abilities while also taking advantage of a distraction from Reigns.
With momentum in his favor, Rollins methodically attacked Goldust while taunting a helpless Cody Rhodes. However, Goldust has tussled with the likes of Roddy Piper and Triple H, buiding a resilience that has led him to a long, storied career and allowed him to battle back and keep Rollins at a disadvantage.
However, as the action spilled to the outside of the ring, Goldust exchanged words with Reigns. Cody took a more direct approach and attacked the Shield member as The Bizarre One returned to the ring to resume his struggle against Rollins. However, Reigns’ distraction was enough for Rollins to recover and roll up his opponent and steal a victory.

Hortonworks makes Hadoop more versatile in new distro
Built on Apache Hadoop YARN architecture, HDP 2.0 changes Hadoop from a single-purpose Web-scale batch data processing platform into a multi-use operating system for batch, interactive, online, and stream processing.
Case in point: Running SQL on Hadoop. Business analysts have been using SQL as the query language to perform ad-hoc queries against data warehouses for years. If you're creating a data lake using Hadoop, you've got to be able to query that data using SQL.
[ Harness the power of Hadoop with InfoWorld's 7 top tools for taming big data. | Explore the current trends and solutions in BI with InfoWorld's interactive Business Intelligence iGuide. | Discover what's new in business applications with InfoWorld's Technology: Applications newsletter. ]
"But by building SQL access on top of Hadoop, it just highlights the challenge of Hadoop being a single application system," writes Arun Murthy, founder and architect at Hortonworks and former architect of the Yahoo Hadoop Map-Reduce Development Team. "For when I run a SQL query on that data, it could consume all the resources of the cluster and cause performance issues for the other applications and jobs running in the cluster-not a good outcome to say the least."
The answer to that problem is YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), the foundation of the recently released Hadoop 2. Apache Hadoop YARN serves as the Hadoop operating system, taking what was a single-use data platform for batch processing and evolving it into a multi-use platform that enables batch, interactive, online and stream processing.
YARN acts as the primary resource manager and mediator of access to data stored in HDFS (Hadoop distributed file system), giving enterprises the capability to store data in a single place and then interact with it in multiple ways, simultaneously, with consistent levels of service.
Hortonworks, provider of the HDP (Hortonworks Data Platform), one of the most popular distributions of Hadoop, was quick to take up the YARN banner today with the announcement of the general availability of HDP 2.0.
HDP 2.0 is the first commercial distribution built on Hadoop 2, delivering the YARN-based architecture and new features from Phase 2 of the Stinger Initiative. The Stinger Initiative is a community-based effort that aims to enhance the speed, scale and breadth of SQL semantics supported by Apache Hive.
"The YARN-based architecture of HDP 2.0 delivers on our mission to enable the modern data architecture by providing one enterprise Hadoop that deploy integrates with existing, and future, data center technologies, says Shaun Connolly, vice president of corporate strategy at Hortonworks.
"In our benchmarking across some of the customers we've been working with, classic MapReduce jobs will just port over from the 1.0 line to the 2.0 line," Connolly adds. "You get twice the performance and you can run twice the jobs. You get a lot more headroom in the cluster."
Meanwhile, the addition of Hive 0.12 (the culmination of phase 2 of the Stinger Initiative) delivers large performance gains for queries that bring them in line with "human interactive response time rather than batch response time."
Connolly says queries that previously took 1,400 seconds for a response can now get responses in fewer than 10 seconds. Phase 3 (targeted for the first quarter of 2014), is expected to improve those response times even more by allowing interim processing to happen within memory.
HDP 2.0 is available for download now. Connolly says HDP 2.0 for Windows will be available next month.

NBA Finals format changed to 2-2-1-1-1

NEW YORK (AP) — NBA owners unanimously voted Wednesday to change the NBA Finals format from 2-3-2 to 2-2-1-1-1.
The change will take effect with this season's finals after it was approved during the preseason board of governors meetings. The league will add an extra day between Games 6 and 7.
The current format was instituted in 1985 in part to ease the amount of cross-country travel with the Celtics and Lakers frequently meeting for the championship. But critics felt it gave an edge to the lower-seeded team.
"There certainly was a perception ... it was unfair to the team that had the better record, that it was then playing the pivotal Game 5 on the road. So this obviously moves that game back to giving home-court advantage to the team with the better record if it's a 2-2 series," Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said.
The higher-seeded team will host Games 1, 2, 5 and 7. The lower seed gets Games 3, 4 and 6, following the same format the NBA uses in all other rounds.
The change to the 2-3-2 format was one of the earliest made by Commissioner David Stern, who has often said he was acting on advice — or complaints — about the travel from former Celtics boss Red Auerbach. But with commercial travel long since replaced by charters, teams didn't have the same difficulties now with the number of flights.
Instead, the ones who had the higher seed found it more inconvenient, Stern said, to be on the road for as many as eight days in a row when the opponent hosted the middle three games.
Silver, who will become commissioner after Stern retires Feb. 1, is a proponent of the 2-2-1-1-1 format, though he said Stern and other league executives all thought it was time for the change.
"It reached a crescendo where basketball people thought it was important and the business people stood down and said it was no longer necessary for the convenience of transportation or the media," Silver said.
