Forbes Earnings Preview: Energy Transfer Partners LP

Analysts are looking for decreased profit for Energy Transfer Partners LP (ETP) when the company reports its results for the fourth quarter on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Energy Transfer Partners reported profit of 49 cents a year ago, but the consensus estimate calls for earnings per share of 44 cents this time around.

Despite not changing over the past month, the consensus estimate is down from three months ago when it was 46 cents. For the fiscal year, analysts are projecting earnings of 69 cents per share. Revenue is expected to be $7.18 billion for the quarter, 294.6% higher than the year-earlier total of $1.82 billion. For the year, revenue is projected to come in at $11.15 billion.

The company has experienced a two-quarter streak of profit loss. In the most recent quarter, profit dipped 44.5% year-over-year, and the figure dropped 24.8% in the second quarter.

Revenue has declined for the third quarter in a row. The year-over-year drop in revenue was 17.2% in third quarter. Prior to that, revenue fell 23.8% in second quarter and 22.6% in the first quarter year-over-year.

The majority of analysts think investors should stand pat on Energy Transfer Partners, with eight of 14 analysts rating it hold. Energy Transfer Partners? average analyst rating hasn?t changed over the past three months.

Energy Transfer Partners is involved in natural gas processing, transportation and marketing operations. It also sells propane and propane-related products and services to residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural customers. One of Energy Transfer Partners? main competitors in the natural gas utilities industry is Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (EPD). Other competitors in the utilities sector include: Energy Transfer Equity, L.P. (ETE), DCP Midstream Partners (DPM), and Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (KMP).
